The UK government is looking to test new technology that would allow electric cars to charge while they drive.
The so-called 'charging roads' would run on magnetic induction technology.
Cables buried underneath highway lanes would generate electromagnetic fields that would be picked up by the car and transformed into power.
Before the technology is rolled across the country, trials will be held in restricted areas.
If proven successful it would reduce the need for drivers to plug-in at home or at special top up spots.
The plan would also see additional chargers placed along highways, to quell the fear that drivers will get stranded if the car runs out of power.
It is estimated to cost nearly $1 billion over the next five years.
