Tesla P90D Faster Than Lamborghini, Bugatti: Motor Trend

A Tesla all-wheel drive P90D took just 2.6 seconds to go from 0 to 60 miles per hour claims Motor Trend. It takes eight seconds for the average family sedan to hit that speed.

Tesla ahead of majors

Motor Trend said that the Lamborghini Aventador priced at $400,000 and Bugatti Veyron priced at $2 million are two-seat high-performance cars, but both take longer than Tesla P90D to reach highway speeds. Very few cars exist today that are faster than the new Tesla supercar
The Ferrari LaFerrari and the Porsche 918 Spyder are two cars that are quicker than P90D. But both these plug-in hybrid cars are priced many times higher than the Tesla car. Starting price of Tesla Model S P90D with the new Ludicrous Mode is $120,000.


The fast acceleration of Tesla Model S P90D seems almost unreal. Motor Trend’s Road test editor, Chris Walton, said, “For the first few seconds, you’re accelerating faster than free-fall so it’s literally like being on an amusement park ride.” Walton added that the Model S does not make any noise while accelerating, unlike other cars, and this makes the entire experience weirder.

What makes P90D fast?

Tesla P90D has two electric motors of which one drives the front wheel while the other drives the back ones. Jointly, both have the capability of producing up to 762 horsepower. Electric motors produce full pulling power at all speeds, whereas gasoline engines have certain speed ranges when which they pull best, and this is the reason they come with gears, notes a report from CNN.
There are a number of cars that can beat a P90D on a race course, for instance, specially-designed sports cars, mainly due to faster cornering and higher top speeds. Motor Trend also tested other Model S sedans that lost steam once their batteries got heated as a consequence of repeated high-performance runs, said associate editor Christian Seabaugh.
Tesla’s new Model X SUV also comes with the Ludicrous Mode. Tesla informed that its next-generation Roadster sports car, due in next four years, will come with a mode called ‘Maximum Plaid,’ which should be faster even than the ‘Ludicrous Mode.’ The company took this name from one of the scenes in Mel Brooks’ 1987 Star Wars parody film Spaceballs, says CNN.
