5 Reasons to Buy a Giant Smartphone

I have a confession to make. I was a giant smartphone hater. I thought, “Who in their right mind would want a monstrosity like that in their pocket?” They’re unwieldy, impractical, unnecessary, I argued. Then it all changed two weeks ago.

Finally having enough of AT&T and my ever-increasing phone bill, I sprung for the chance to switch back to T-Mobile. I figured it would be in and out, just get the iPhone 6 I had, and be on my way. But just as I was about to pull the trigger, I had second thoughts. Should I try out the 6S? The salesman did his job and got me to upgrade. Might as well have the latest and greatest!

But I noticed the shiny new iPhone 6S Plus he had. I asked him, so how is it? Is it really that much better? Why do you have a giant smartphone? Well, he says, everything looks nicer. Photos, the web — but look at this! He pulls up Netflix and starts streaming an episode of Breaking Bad. Wow, I thought, it’s like a damn mini HDTV! And it was the same price per month as the 6S. What the hell, I pulled the trigger, and I’m now the owner of a giant smartphone myself.
Was there a bit of buyer’s remorse? In the initial hours and days afterward, sure — I’d be lying if I told you otherwise. But this big ol’ smartphone has grown on me, and I’m here to tell you why it isn’t so bad. Who knows, you might be a convert too.

1. It’s easier to read and use

The extra screen space just doesn’t make the phone itself bigger, but also everything on it. Text on webpages is way easier to read from a distance, and the on-screen keyboard and parts of the interface are much easier to interact with. Yeah, you have to hold it a bit differently, but you get used to it.

2. It’s actually bearable to watch videos on

I don’t know, with my smaller phones, after a while it just wasn’t too fun to watch video on. With this iPhone 6S Plus, I’m able to stand watching video for long periods of time. I actually watched all but half the season of Amazon’s The Man in the High Castle on this phone, and didn’t even think twice.

3. It’s better for gaming

Gaming on smaller phones works OK, but not well. Think of portable gaming consoles — bigger screens are now commonplace. It really seems like gameplay is more immersive on this big screen phone.

4. You’re getting a bigger battery

Hey, there’s only so much you can squeeze into a small smartphone. The increased real estate gives more room for components, and with many bigger phones comes bigger batteries. Yes, that bigger screen needs more power, but it’s not much. So you’ll be reaching for the power cord less (unless you are now watching more movies on your phone like I am, then…).

5. It just feels different

It’s hard to describe, but with this bigger phone it just seems like I have a better hold on it. I am notorious for dropping my phones (many broken screens to prove it), but in two weeks I haven’t dropped this iPhone 6S Plus once. I don’t know if the increased size of the device just allows you to hold it better or you’re just more aware its there, but that’s great news for clumsy people like me.
I’m sure for some long-time giant smartphone owners, their reasons for loving their devices might be different. However for me, somebody who had completely opposed ever even owning one, I’m honestly very surprised I’ve grown to love this phone. Moral of the story? Don’t knock it until you try it.
