An Android version named 'Nankhatai'? Why not? Well,
Google CEO Sundar Pichai thinks it is not a bad idea. After naming its
Android versions lollipop, kit-kat, ice-cream sandwich and jellybean,
Google might name the future generation of Androids after the names of
Indian desserts, says Mr. Pichai.
In a free-wheeling
conversation with students at Shri Ram College of Commerce (SRCC) in
Delhi University on Thursday, Mr. Pichai said the tech giant might
conduct an online poll while naming its future androids. “And if all
Indians vote, I think we can make [an Indian name] it happen,” he said.
The 43-year-old Chennai-born tech executive, who is on a
two-day visit to India, attended an interactive session, #AskSundar,
organised by the college in association with Google.
During
the session, Mr. Pichai answered questions by students from various
schools and colleges, gathered at the indoor sports stadium of SRCC
college, which was packed to capacity.
The session
was moderated by cricket commentator, Harsha Bhogle, who called the
India-born executive the 'Rahul Dravid of the tech industry'. During the
conversation with Mr. Bhogle, the tech executive also expressed his
love for cricket.
He said that he wanted to be a cricketer in his childhood and admired legends like Sunil Gavaskar.
“I
did dream of being a cricketer like so many Indians. I used to be a
huge fan of [Sunil] Gavaskar when he was playing and later, Sachin
[Tendulkar] when he played. I always had a dream,” he said.
Apart
from talking about expansion plans of Google and the education system
in India, Mr. Pichai also spoke about his personal interests. When
someone asked him what he would have been if not the Google CEO, he said
that he would still build software.
“Things that I
am excited about are computer science, engineering, coding and
self-driven cars,” said the self-proclaimed tech geek, who claims to own
20-30 smartphones.
