#Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) has its heart set on ensuring that the benefits of technology aren’t limited to the wealthy. The U.S. software giant has vowed to give $1 billion’s worth of cloud services to university researchers and non-profit groups. The pledge will be carried out over the next three years.

Microsoft donates cloud services

Cloud computing offers a massive range of applications and conveniences that help drive innovation. It also allows for minimized costs while increasing efficiency. Microsoft’s donation will provide researchers with access to computing power, storage, remote software and applications via the Internet.
Satya Nadella, the company’s CEO, said he hopes to discuss the details of the donation on Wednesday. The talks will be held at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) aims to assist at least 70,000 non-profits with this program.

Microsoft assured that the $1 billion worth of the donation was based on the market price of cloud services, not on what it costs to have them rendered. Though better knows for its software, the firm has been vying strongly in the space of cloud computing. Microsoft offers a fast-growing product that gives it users remote computing power as well as other benefits. Called Azure, it will be included in the company’s donation along with Office 365 and a number of services that help with mobile management.

Nedella gave remarks on Tuesday which highlighted 17 goals set by global leaders last year. The goals aim to do away with a number of world issues such as poverty, hunger and poor access to health-care by 2030.
“The scale and computational power enabled by cloud computing will be essential to unlocking solutions to this list of some of the world’s seemingly unsolvable problems,” wrote the CEO.
Microsoft has a number of other charitable projects on its agenda. The company said it wants to bring broadband Internet to more communities. It also plans to grow a previously established program that brings free cloud services to over 600 entities by 50 percent.

Microsoft conference sold out in one minute

Returning to conferences, Microsoft(NASDAQ:MSFT) managed to sell all the tickets to its yearly developers conference in record time this year. It took only a minute for the tickets to sell when the made available on Tuesday. Now developers have to be placed on a waiting list is they with to be part of the event.
The annual event is very popular. Last year, tickets sold out in about 20 minutes. It will be in San Fransisco and spans over three days, the 30th of March to the 1st of April. Though there a $100 increase in the ticket price this year, fans were not deterred. Tickets cost $2,195.
