Destination of the Week: Zaria

 loveswaggs     06:09:00     Fun360     No comments

Fondly referred to as Z-town, Zaria is a cosmopolitan, wealthy, historical and religious city. It played a key role in the development of Kaduna state, spread of the Islamic religion as well as trade in Northern Nigeria.

Formerly know as Zazzau, Zaria is circled by walls and fortresses that largely served as refuge during war. The city has a strong traditional institution that still exists today through the emir of Zaria. However, the powers of these institutions were abruptly ended with the invasion commanded by Frederick Lugard in 1901.
Despite the invasion of civilization, there are several tourists attractions that are worth checking out in Zaria. This and much more will be unveiled as Jumia Travel, Africa’s number 1 hotel booking portal drives you through the sights and sounds of Zaria. Don’t forget to fasten your seat belt!

The Zaria city walls and gates were an impregnable fortress that protected the inhabitants of the city from enemies and attackers. Zaria has a total of 8 gates which are largely preserved even though only seven are currently being used. It is worth visiting because the walls and gates are an integral part of the history of Zaria.
Emir’s Palace
The Emir’s Palace is not only a place where the emir resides but also, a location to preserve the cultural symbols of Zaria for future generations. In addition, the beautiful and amazing architectural design of the palace will leave you awestruck. The head and traditional ruler of the palace is Alhaji Shehu Idris.
